Kathryn and Senator Dave

If you’ve never taken photos with your favorite horse, then you’re missing out on a very unique experience. And if you’re a graduating senior, this is the perfect time to book that session. Luckily, I come armed with my husband, Brent, who’s quickly becoming an expert at “getting ears,” setting feet and blotting away the sweat on those hotter days.

I was very thankful for Brent during Kathryn’s shoot back in June because, in true Arkansas fashion, it was sweltering. We made the shoot as quick as possible because of the heat, but we still had a great time together.

Meet Senator Dave, or simply Dave around the barn. This 16.3 hand off-the-track-thoroughbred (OTTB) was as sweet as can be. He was also super relaxed, which might make the fact that he had a successful career on the racetrack for the first 8 years of his life a bit surprising. But based on Kathryn’s ultra-chill demeanor, Dave simply feeds off her vibes. I would guess that’s what makes these two so well matched: balance.

Now that Dave has Kathryn’s devotion, the two have spent their time together doing all things dressage and jumping. This fall they’ll be entering their first eventing competitions together. The pair spent the summer preparing for this new undertaking and I’m excited to watch them shine out there!

And if you’re not yet convinced that a senior shoot with your horse is a superb idea, here are a few specific reasons to help change your mind:

  1. Who loves you more than your horse? Probably nobody other than your family, so why not capture that devotion along with the turning of a page in your life?

  2. If you’ll be selling your horse after graduation, then there’s no better time to put your special bond down on film. If you’re both moving into the next phase of life, then you can’t miss out on documenting your special bond as much as possible.

  3. These shoots are fun! There’s nothing better than adding your favorite pal into the mix when it comes to a senior shoot. I’ve never left a senior session without having a good time and I think my clients can say the same.

  4. Just because I’m an equine photographer, doesn’t mean we have to take all your pictures with your horse. If you want some pictures with your horse and some without, no problem!

  5. Senior shoots don’t just apply to high school. If you’re graduating with a bachelor’s, associate’s, master’s, doctoral, or any other type of degree, a senior session with your equine pattern is a must!
