As a photographer, I never stop learning. That’s part of why I enjoy this job so much! Technology is always moving and shaking, and there’s never a limit on creativity. I decided it was time to hone my skills with action shots. So, naturally, I thought of the fastest sport on horseback and decided to start there: barrel racing.

Luckily, Maryanne Poe with Broken Spurs Horsemanship in Wellington, Florida, was happy to provide me with a test subject. Normally I get to know my subjects before the shoot so I can better capture their personality, but this was a very different format. Maryanne and I both showed up at the arena and got to work.

This shoot was way out of my comfort zone in so many ways, but that’s the beauty of growing both personally and professionally. At one point, I was laying on my belly outside the fence with dirt hitting my face. It was actually really thrilling to be that close to the action to get THE shot. Barrel racing is a unique beast simply because there are so many angles you can approach these photos from. It was challenging learning where to be to get the shots that I wanted. And it’s a work in progress for me, which means I’m looking for more action shoots in the near future!

I have a few action shoots on my bucket list: on-the-ranch branding, a polo match, a rodeo, jumping session, and a horse pulling a wagon.
